Objectives: Systemic theory emphasizes the relational spaces between a couple which, although a valuable starting point in therapy, is rarely sufficient for effective practice. This presentation will consider the problems of adhering to restrictive orthodoxies (Jenkins, 1985). I will describe some concepts that enable us to transcend the immediacy of what is presented, in particular, the balancing function of the ‘unspoken present’ (Goldbeter, 1999), the ‘inside out, outside in’ dynamic (Jenkins, in preparation), ‘invisible contracts’, ways of understanding ‘couples’ misunderstandings’, and the ‘pact to disappoint’ in couple relationships.
I will draw on my understandings of systemic and psychodynamic theories as a framework for introducing these different concepts in couples work, - also linking transgenerational gendered stories.
An aspect of this workshop will be to consider the role of the therapist and what she/he brings into the encounter, - the power of their ‘unspoken absent’. This refers to the, often invisible, third point in the therapeutic triangle of couples therapy.
